Haviland History

Haviland was settled by Quakers from Indiana.  It was named to honor Laura Haviland, a Quaker from Michigan, who was an activist and very involved in the “underground railroad” movement.  She also founded a school for poor children in Michigan.  It is not certain if she ever visited the town with her name, but local legend says she came near the turn of the 20th century.  It is certain that an assistant visited because copies of an autobiography were left to the public library, Friends church library, academy and college.

Quiltmaking in Haviland

Quilt making has been an important activity of many Haviland women for over seventy-five years.  In 1932 an auxiliary was founded to help make articles to be sold at aukction to raise money for the support of Friends Bible College, now Barclay Coollege.  From the beginning of this auction the quilts were the most desired items and raised the most money.  In 1932 the total brought in by the auction was $300.  Almost fifty years later in 1980 the auction brought in $52,000 and the highest quilt was $2,200.  For the past few years 28 to 30 large quilts and 18 to 25 baby quilts have ben auctioned each year.  These quilts are not only made by local ladies but are donated from a number of churches and individuals.  In 2005 the highest quilt sold for $7,600 which is the highest that any quilt has sold.

CAMPUS SUMMARY

Barclay College is a four-year interdenominational Christian Bible College
with an Evangelical Friends Church heritage.  It was founded in 1917 as the Kansas Central Bible Training School and became a center for training and preparation of pastors and missionaries.  Since its founding, the college name has changed but our focus is still to prepare students for effective Christian life, service and leadership regardless of their major of study.  Barclay's main campus is located in south-central Kansas in the town of Haviland.  The location combines the advantages of a very friendly, safe, small-town environment with easy access to larger-town services about ten to twenty minutes from the campus.  Barclay has an attractive, open campus of approximately 17 acres and 7 major buildings.  The smaller size allows for specializing in relationship building and student interaction...a place where you can be known by your name, not your student ID number.
